Volunteer Programs
Volunteers are welcome from every corner of the world throughout the year.
We have nine months of school and one and half month of summer school each year. Once in Guinea, volunteers rely on staff, students and parents to support your experience. Volunteers help with many things including promoting the school in the local community by working with teachers, teaching in the classroom, helping with administrative duties and help organizing upcoming events.
While helping, Sabu International volunteers also gain at the personal level. They experience the value of intercultural communication, develop and practice languages and participate actively in the Sabu community.
A regular class is 45 minutes long for a single session. Recess is 11:30 a.m to 12:15 p.m. During recess, the students play different hand and string games. Sabu International uses a comprehensive curriculum that is tied into West Africa curricula. Instruction in kindergarten through seventh grade is primarily in the English language while all children learn French.
A handful of our students come to school without having complete school supplies. Most of the school supplies that students bring to school run out before the school ends. Their parents are responsible for buying their school supplies and uniforms and for providing their transport fares for those that came from long distances to attend school. A large number of our students live near the school neighborhood.
They walk on foot to come to school. Also, 53% of our students came from long distances by car or mini buses to attend school. They have to pay transport to come to Sabu Campus.
We have three semesters in each school year. There are breaks in the winter, spring, and the beginning of the summer. We also have a month and two weeks of summer school every year for newly enrolled students, for students that need to complete their grade work and our medical nursing classes.
