Samuel's Story and The History of Sabu International School
In 1990's, war and various military coups ravaged Sierra Leone, resulting in massive loss of life and destruction of property. Samuel Thoronka was one of many who fled, and with little more that the clothes on his back, made his way to neighboring Guinea.
After several days of
sleeping under the sky with other refugees in the Guinea Capital,
Conakry, Thoronka found himself inspired with a mission. He
started a school with an old friend from Sierra Leone for the refugee's
children. They began with 35 English-speaking children and
made a school out of a porch and shack.

The school received an unexpected boost when Samuel met an American artist named Jeremy Tiani Tarr. Tarr was studying drumming in Conakry, Guinea West Africa, and formed a fast friendship with Samuel. He contacted his family and friends in America, told them of the school's vision, and found that they were happy to send support. Shortly therafter, the school recieved both money and school supplies from dozens of Tarr's thoughtful friends and family.
In
the
years since,
the Sabu International School has grown to K-12 school with 400 eager
students, 20 staff members, and a group of involved parents. The school
now leases two buildings in a fenced in compound and teaches not only
refugees from Sierra Leone, but children from Guinea, Ghana, The Ivory
Coast, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Nigeria, and
Liberia.
We believe that the Sabu International school can grow to be a major educational institute which serves children from all corners of the globe. We invite you to help create a wonderous and peaceful future.
