Sustainability
Learning outside the classroom is as important as the learning that takes place inside. Sustainable skills are integrated into the daily school curriculum and help involve the students, teachers, and parents in generating income to help support the school. Gardening, farming, dying fabric, community service and other projects help provide funds for the school operation.
Above all, our goal is to equip students who will become contributing members of their community.
Farming and Gardening
Most of our students come to school without lunch and the school has no canteen nor provides any lunch services for the students.
In 2001 our faculty and of group volunteers thought it would be a great idea if the school would embark on gardening/farming project and use the proceeds to prepare lunch at the school.
Since West Africa is tropical rice growing region, the school is presently working on cultivating,
- ten acres of rice and beans per year
- five acres of peanut/groundnut
- two acres of cassava and potatoes
- a gardening and grow, eggplants, tomatoes, red peppers, greens and lettuce.
- raise some chickens and eggs
Students and faculty travel there every weekend, on breaks and the long summer holiday.
Cookery/Mini Canteen
The proceeds from Sabu garden project will not only help us with a school cookery/canteen shop, but we will able to establish canteen locations where we will sell reasonable nutorious food to our students and the public. We will prepare breakfast in the early hours of the days, lunch and dinner all year round. Our food will be the talk of the town.
Used Clothing
Through out the year we collect quality used clothing, shoes, mattresses, furniture, hats and electrical appliances and computers, and school supplies The items collected are shipped by barrel across the Atlantic. Once they arrive large portion of the items are used to improve the school infrastructure and a portion is used for the auction event that we hosts every March.
Please click here to see a full list of items that we collect and contact address.
Stationary Printing Press
Due to the huge expenses the school incurs every year on assessments, photocopies, printing etc, the administration thinks it will a great idea if we can open a printing place that will serve the public and the school at the same. Doing so will raise funds to cover the school huge stationary expenses and will enhance classroom creativity.
Handmade ProjectBeing a community, we are surrounded with a group of talented people. We have parents, students and teachers who posses talents on a whole range of art and craft. We launch the handmade project by focusing on the following: dye fabric, Djembe drums, necklace beads, woven basket, carving.
We currently have Djembe drums and dyed fabric on our shopping cart to sell. If you need a fabric for a dress, please contact us. we will make sure you get it as quickly as possible. The proceeds goes to the school's annual fund.
Tailoring Shop
It started with the school uniforms which brought about the idea of the dying fabrics. We know it will be a great idea for our students to learn about sewing .
